COMMENTS: Robert Suggs was twelve years old on December 28, 1835. He was working for Erastus Rogers, the suttler at Fort King in Marion County, Florida. At about 2:30 in the afternoon, Osceola and his band of Seminole warriors attacked the suttler's building killing the Indian agent, Gen. Wiley Thompson, along with Lt. Constantine Smith, Erastus Rogers, and Robert Suggs. According to accounts of the massacre, Robert was the only victim who was not scalped or otherwise mutilated. This atrocity is today known as the Wiley Thompson Massacre. At about the same time, a column of U.S. soldiers under the command of Maj. Francis Dade was attacked and massacred just a few miles away. Robert's brothers Ezekiel and John joined the Florida Mounted Militia to fight the Seminoles along with brothers in law, Jonas Ellis and Anthony Ivey. The United States government launched the Florida War otherwise known as the Second Seminole War. At the time of his death, Robert's parents, Ezekiel and Margaret, had already died.

The Second Seminole War was long, brutal and bloody. Robert's brother, Ezekiel, died at the hands of the Seminoles and possibly other family members met the same fate. There are Florida Mounted Militia records for other men named Suggs, unknown males on the 1820 census record in South Carolina and this family group sheet. Those Suggs names from the Florida Mounted Militia don't appear on any 1840 or 1850 census record. After years of fighting, John Alligood Suggs gathered up what was left of his family and relocated to Colorado County, Texas.
