Comments:

James L. English served for a time as the Justice of the Peace for western Colorado County, Texas. His office was located in Oakland, Colorado County, Texas. In his short life, he was also a farmer, a barber and a teacher. To date, his burial place is unknown, but is presumed to be in the Luling City Cemetery, as his mother-in-law, wife, son and daughter-in-law are buried there. The reports of his death in November 1895 mention that he was a consumptive. For a consumptive, he was surprisingly active in his last year of life. And there is a family story that he rode horseback from Luling to Ottine to buy lumber. It was cold weather at the time. As he was crossing the San Marcos river, the horse threw him, and he was completely soaked. He had to walk a good way for help. Soon after he sickened and died, as reported in two newspapers, at his brother-in-law's brother's home in Oak Forest, Gonzales County, Texas--somewhat south of Ottine, Gonzales County, Texas.

It is very probable that he is one of the young men pictured in the Whittington family reunion picture on the Colorado County, Texas, genweb site.

Mannie English lived on in Luling with her widowed mother and infant son. They earned a living as seamstresses, and finally her mother obtained a Confederate widow's pension from the state--which I believe was something in the amount of $8.00 a month. Mannie Laidley English never remarried.
